I chose “Gospel Ship” by the Carter Family. The Carter family consisted of AP “Doc” Carter, Sara Carter, and Maybelle. My first impression of this song was that I wanted to sing along and tap my foot. The song made me feel satisfied, meaning it was good but nothing extraordinary. The song was catchy and will probably be stuck in my head for a day or two. I think the rhyming throughout the song is what makes it catching and stuck in my head. The accompaniment was very basic, but it went with the lyrics. My favorite part of the song was when the family came together and harmonized with each other. This brought dimension to the song and made it more interesting. My least favorite part was when, I'm guessing Sara, she sang by herself for long periods of the song. This was my least favorite part because it was boring at times and felt like she was dragging the song along. The sections where there was no singing and just the guitar feels like it was made for dancing of some sort. This song is technically sacred music, but when I think of sacred music this song doesn’t come to mind which is interesting.
I feel the same way about this piece! I love how all of the pieces from this era of popular music in the United States are super upbeat and catchy. I thought the harmonic points of this piece were so fun to listen to, while the solo sections did kind of drag. It's not very often that songs from this era that are considered "sacred" or "gospel" are really interesting to listen to, so I applaud the creators for their ability to achieve that aspect. Good job!
