I chose “Great Speckled Bird” by Roy Acuff . This was Roy Acuff’s first hit record and was the national anthem of country music. My first impression was that this was a nice easy-going song. Acuff’s voice is interesting to listen to because it’s smooth, but it has an old country sound to it. I think the lyrics and the guitar go well together. The lyrics are weird. The first time I listened to the song,  the lyrics didn’t stick out, but I listened to it another time to specifically listen to the lyrics and they are definitely not what I thought they were about. The song is a ballad which means that it tells a story, and the story is confusing to me. It seems like he’s singing about th is speckled bird that is actually a girl and how she is different from the group which is the church.   I don’t know what instrument makes it but there's like a Hawaiian feel to the song and I really like how it makes the song sound. It has a country and Hawaiian feel whi...

I chose “Gospel Ship” by the Carter Family. The Carter fam ily consisted of AP “Doc” Carter, Sara Carter, and Maybelle. My first impression of this song was that I wanted to sing along and tap my foot. The song made me feel satisfied, meaning it was good but nothing extraordinary. The song was catchy and will probably be stuck in my head for a day or two. I think the rhyming throughout the song is what makes it catching and stuck in my head. The accompaniment was very basic, but it went with the lyrics. My favorite part of the song was when the family came together and harmonized with each other. This brought dimension to the song and made it more interesting . My least favorite part was when, I'm guessing Sara, she sang by herself for long periods of the song. This was my least favorite part because it was boring at times and felt like she was dragging the song along. The sections where there was no singing and just the guitar feels like it was made for dancing of some sort...

Listening blog week 3

I chose “How Deep is the Ocean” which was written by Irving Berlin and performed by Bing Crosby. The song starts with what sounds like a trumpet, which then quiets down to almost nothing for Bing Crosby to start singing. Halfway through the song Bing Crosby stops singing and then there's the trumpet solo again which stops, and Bing Crosby sings again. I think the way the song was put together makes it not seem as boring and long. The song is sung by Bing Crosby who is the most popular crooner, and he makes the song nice and gentle. The song is slow and easy to sing along to . The lyrics are very interesting because all the lines are questions , and some lines are repeated. The lyrics sound like a conversation between two lovers with one singing the questions , and even though it's not written , the other can answer the questions. A cool thing with the title is that it’s the last question asked at the end of the song, so it makes it seem like it goes in a full ci...

Listening blog week 2

I chose to listen to Soldier Joy sung by Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers. The song starts with the singers telling everyone who they are and for people to start dancing, and this makes a connection between the artists and their audience. The song is very upbeat, and like it states makes me want to get up and so a little jig. The fast-paced violin makes the song jumpy, and normally when I hear music with a violin it is usually a slow peaceful song . My favorite part is when it repeats "Grasshopper sitten on a sweet potato vine" over and over because it is somewhat easier to sing along and dance to. My least favorite part was when it sings of morphine and beer and how it is going to take them away from the world. It shows the sad truth of how soldiers have to get away from the world because of how bad the wars they fight are. The song’s music aspect reminds me of an old cartoon Disney movie set in the west with cowboys in a saloon drinkin g and listening to music after...
