Listening blog week 2

I chose to listen to Soldier Joy sung by Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers. The song starts with the singers telling everyone who they are and for people to start dancing, and this makes a connection between the artists and their audience. The song is very upbeat, and like it states makes me want to get up and so a little jig. The fast-paced violin makes the song jumpy, and normally when I hear music with a violin it is usually a slow peaceful song. My favorite part is when it repeats "Grasshopper sitten on a sweet potato vine" over and over because it is somewhat easier to sing along and dance to. My least favorite part was when it sings of morphine and beer and how it is going to take them away from the world. It shows the sad truth of how soldiers have to get away from the world because of how bad the wars they fight are. The song’s music aspect reminds me of an old cartoon Disney movie set in the west with cowboys in a saloon drinking and listening to music after a long day of working. The song was written in 1929 which was when the stock market crash which also started the Great Depression, which can explain the reason for some of the harsh lyrics.

  1. Hi Sammi! I think you did a great job on this journal entry. I agree with you that it is totally a song that makes you want to get up and dance, or at least tap your foot. I really like the violin and the fast pace of the song. I bet that when the soldiers were listening to this song is took them away from their war world into a more joyful world!

  2. I love your blog post about Soldier Joy! I couldn't agree more, when we listened to this song in class I couldn't help but tap my foot! I noticed that everyone around me was the same way so you are exactly right. I never thought about it being like the old Disney cartoons but now I can totally see that. Really good job!

  3. I also listened to this song multiple times and dislikes the final verses of morphine and and beer. Though it does have an upbeat style of music it is very sad and makes me think if today's soldiers feel similar to the solders of the 1920s. Makes me grateful for those serving.
