I chose “Great Speckled Bird” by Roy Acuff. This was Roy Acuff’s first hit record and was the national anthem of country music. My first impression was that this was a nice easy-going song. Acuff’s voice is interesting to listen to because it’s smooth, but it has an old country sound to it. I think the lyrics and the guitar go well together. The lyrics are weird. The first time I listened to the song, the lyrics didn’t stick out, but I listened to it another time to specifically listen to the lyrics and they are definitely not what I thought they were about. The song is a ballad which means that it tells a story, and the story is confusing to me. It seems like he’s singing about this speckled bird that is actually a girl and how she is different from the group which is the church. I don’t know what instrument makes it but there's like a Hawaiian feel to the song and I really like how it makes the song sound. It has a country and Hawaiian feel which I don’t think I’ve heard before. My favorite lyric is when he sings, “For I want to be one never fearing the face of my Savior to look when He cometh descending from Heaven.” I just like the message it shares.
After listening to this song I can see what you meant by it being a mix between country and hawaiian. It was a super catchy song, but I agree the lyrics were pretty interesting. His voice is unique and really matches the music. I like how the lyrics are very metaphorical and differ from the overall feel of the song.
ReplyDeleteThis piece definitely confused me the first time I listened to it. I knew that the lyrics are supposed to be metaphorical, but it was still really strange to hear a song about a “Great Speckled Bird”. Disregarding the lyrics, I think that Roy Acuff had a nice voice and he did a great job on this song.
