I decided to listen to Graceland by Paul Simon. I’ve never heard of this song before, and my first impression is that it’s a pretty chill easy going song. I feel like it could have been a minute shorter. It was pretty repetitive for a four and a half minute long song. It takes about 40 seconds in the song to get to the lyrics which I feel like is unnecessary. I would usually say that long intros are cool and add to the song, but I don’t feel like it added anything to this song. The lyrics also end about 20 seconds before the song officially ends which is a little weird and I don’t see that often. I think the lyrics are the best part of the song. They flow well with the music, it’s just that the music is a little boring. I’m assuming the lyrics are about an ex-wife or something, and I like songs that tell a story which gives the song more points on my scale. My favorite lyric was when he sings, “And I see losing love is like a window in your heart”. This line speaks of a relationship ending.

  1. Yeah that's a good point, it is a pretty long intro. I think it is cool that even though the tempo is so fast paced that it still feels like a chill song. I also really like the little licks that the guitar plays in between him singing though and I think it really adds to the song. The lyrics really did add to the song for sure and I think he did a great job in that sense.

  2. I also thought that four and a half minutes for this song was especially long and repetitive. However though I think the repetitiveness makes sense for the time because a lot of songs in the 80's were extremely repetitive to make it easy to listen to. Another common theme which is interesting in this song along with a lot of other songs in this time is the theme of a lost love.
